Most tissues experience an oxygen concentration of ~1-13% in vivo; however, the vast majority of cell-based in vitro research is conducted under atmospheric conditions. This is a hyperoxic situation for almost all cell types, does not accurately represent in vivo conditions and significantly impacts cell responses.
