Measuring Isolated Mitochondria

Isolated mitochondria offer a very useful, direct and well-established model of the investigation of drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity. The traditional approach is to measure mitochondrial oxygen consumption in single-channel electrode-based systems.

However, using MitoXpress® Xtra Oxygen Consumption assay, compounds can be screened in 96- and 384- well plate format, while information on mechanism of action can be generated using substrates specific for individual complexes of the electron transport chain (ETC).

This industry-validated assay combines the information content of traditional electrode measurements with the convenience and throughput of microplate methods and is used broadly both as an investigative tool and to determine the mitochondria liability of new chemical entities.
