Introduction

There is a growing awareness that the oxygen concentrations used in standard cell culture represent a hyperoxic condition for the vast majority of in vitro cell models. This has led to a desire to use lower, more physiologically-relevant oxygen concentrations, through the adoption of dedicated hypoxia work stations and gas-control enabled plate readers. This work has highlighted the significant and often-overlooked impact cell respiration can have on cellular oxygenation and revealed the critical importance of oxygen availability as a factor in determining cell physiology and signal transduction responses.

Luxcel Biosciences has been at the forefront of these developments and is now enabling pioneering research through the provision of kits for the convenient real-time monitoring of cellular oxygenation in both 2D and 3D models and the parallel investigation of cell metabolism. These tools are finding widespread use in research areas such as hypoxia, tumour metabolism and ischemic signalling.
